Unleashing the Power of Nature: cultivating Natural Intelligence

25/02/2021 @ 18:00 - 19:30

Following the launch of Perspectivist’s #Regenerate21 series on the Economy of Place (see video highlights), we are pleased to explore the competences and intelligences needed in building a regenerative economy. Together with our guest Leen Gorissen, we will discuss how Natural Intelligence can help transform landscapes, cities and industry, as well as the way we work together.

Much is already known about the benefits of nature on happiness, health and cognitive performance. Thanks to the groundbreaking works on biomimicry by Janine Benyus and Dayna Baumeister, a revived attention has also been put on using life’s principles in design, including architecture and production systems. Today, Natural Intelligence offers an even broader opportunity by integrating life’s wisdom in the way we experience, learn and act. With her new book, innovation biologist and regenerator Leen Gorissen proposes a nature-powered innovation framework helping us find solutions to tackle the climate emergency and growing divide of our communities.

In contrast to most man-made systems which are designed for stability, control and predictability, natural systems thrive on disruption and disturbance because they have been designed for uncertainty and unpredictability. Building the future on the wisdom of millions of years of natural innovation could indeed be the best chance we get to create a livable future. How can we use this inherent intelligence in the way we design new Economies of Place and a global regenerative network?

For example, in chemistry, 80.000 man-made chemicals in use today are toxic and require massive amounts of energy to be produced. Natural chemistry, by contrast, is most often non-toxic, biodegradable and water-based. In community design, just as in nature, diversity, emergence and trial and error can open up new ways of unleashing collective creativity, resilience and happiness. As Leen Gorissen puts it “The nature of the future and the future of nature are interdependent.“

We look forward to an exciting discussion on Natural Intelligence and its concrete applications!
